Podcasts Hosted by Women Worth Your Commute

Nine podcasts hosted by women, most of them African or from the diaspora, covering culture, money, mental health, menopause and women's health, for the danfo, the matatu or the Tube.

TL;DR: Nine women-hosted podcasts for your commute: I Said What I Said, Legally Clueless, I Like Girls, Toke Moments, Therapy for Black Girls, Menopause Whilst Black, Blush and Bloom, The Clever Girls Know Podcast and Brown Ambition. We checked each show's status on 9 October 2026 and noted which ones are between seasons.

Whether you spend your mornings in Lagos traffic, on a matatu into Nairobi CBD, on a trotro in Accra or squeezed onto the Central line, a good podcast turns dead time into your time. And there is something special about voices that sound like home: women who get the jokes, the family dynamics and the specific pressures of being an African woman, wherever you live.

Here are nine podcasts hosted by women, mostly African and diaspora women, covering culture, money, mental health and women's health. We checked each show's recent episodes on 9 October 2026, so you know what is active and what is resting between seasons.

For culture and conversation

I Said What I Said

Hosted by Jola Ayeye and FK Abudu in Lagos, this is, in its own words, Nigeria's biggest podcast, mixing social commentary and pop culture with a lot of humorous banter. Expect current events, careers, money, dating, family and the general confusion of adulthood. The show is back for Season 8 in 2026, so there are plenty of new episodes to catch up on.

Legally Clueless

A weekly podcast from Kenyan media personality and activist Adelle Onyango, documenting her journey as, in her words, an unapologetically African woman. With hundreds of episodes and new ones still dropping, it is a space where Africans share stories from their lives that teach, make you cry and make you laugh. A perfect matatu companion.

I Like Girls

Aisha Salaudeen's documentary series explores the diverse stories of African women, with each episode offering firsthand insight into how gender shapes women's lives. The latest season, from 2024, focuses on Nigerian women in politics and governance. It feels more like a radio documentary than a chat show.

Toke Moments

Broadcaster Toke Makinwa hosts candid conversations with friends and guests about dating, marriage, career and identity, from first-time motherhood to creativity and imposter feelings. New episodes are still coming out, the latest in September 2026.

For your mind and body

Therapy for Black Girls

Psychologist Dr Joy Harden Bradford hosts this weekly show about mental health and personal development for Black women, with Friday minisodes on pop culture through a mental health lens. It is very much active: the 7 October 2026 episode was about what your menstrual cycle wants you to know, which is right up our street. If that topic interests you, our guide to understanding your cycle is a good companion read.

Menopause Whilst Black

Broadcaster, artist, author and menopause activist Karen Arthur places the experiences of Black UK-based women front and centre by sharing their stories of menopause. Season 8 aired in 2024 and the latest episode we found was from May 2025, so it may be between seasons, but the archive is one of the warmest places to start if you or your mum are in perimenopause. Pair it with our post on menopause and African women.

Blush and Bloom

Our own podcast at Asele, hosted by Gigi Kenneth. Each episode is a conversation with a founder, clinician, researcher or advocate working in women's health, on topics from endometriosis and pelvic health to breastfeeding, nutrition and the women's health data gap. We are biased, of course, so we will just say: if you like the posts here, you might enjoy hearing the people behind the ideas. Find every episode on the Blush and Bloom page, or start with period pain and body literacy.

For money and business

The Clever Girls Know Podcast

Bola Sokunbi, founder of Clever Girl Finance, talks money with women at different stages of their financial lives: budgeting, debt, investing, building a business and the mindset that goes with it. New episodes come out regularly, the most recent in late September 2026. Good for anyone starting a "sort my finances out" era before January.

Brown Ambition

Personal finance expert and journalist Mandi Woodruff serves up no-nonsense money and career wisdom with a side of inspiration. New episodes come out twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, and recent ones have covered AI and jobs, money and motherhood, and the week's money headlines.

Which podcast should I start with?

Pick by mood. For a laugh and a sense of home, start with I Said What I Said or Legally Clueless. For something reflective, I Like Girls. For your health and wellbeing, Therapy for Black Girls, Menopause Whilst Black or Blush and Bloom. For your bank account, The Clever Girls Know Podcast or Brown Ambition. Try one episode of three different shows this week and keep the one you look forward to.

How do I listen safely on my commute?

Keep the volume at a level where you can still hear traffic, announcements and people around you, especially when walking or crossing roads. Download episodes on Wi-Fi so you are not eating into your data. And on a busy bus at night, one earbud out is a sensible habit.

Make it a ritual

A podcast can be a small daily ritual that belongs only to you. Save your favourite show for the drive home as a reward, or listen while you walk part of the way. If you notice certain episodes leave you calmer or more motivated, jot that down. If you log your mood in Asele, you might start to see which habits help you feel more like yourself.

Happy listening, and if you have a favourite we missed, tell us.
